Shawn Thompson
Shawn Thompson is among the most accomplished protection dog trainers in the United States, an elite Schutzhund/IGP champion, U.S. World Team competitor, and one of the most decorated trainers globally. With over 50 working titles and a proven record building and running his own businesses, his dogs are developed through a methodology rooted in real-world application, not sport-only preparation. His competitive background in tracking, obedience, and protection phases gives him an unmatched understanding of what it takes to produce a dog that performs reliably under genuine pressure. Every Guardian Protection Dog is shaped by his hands-on involvement from initial temperament evaluation through final placement.
Our Approach to Training
We are hands-on with every dog in our program, from initial evaluation through the day a dog leaves for its new home. Our training program was developed by Co-Founder Shawn Thompson, a highly respected figure in the working-dog world whose career spans more than two decades of elite K9 development. Shawn has qualified for the Schutzhund World Team four times, earned multiple high-level protection-sport titles, holds advanced obedience and protection certifications, and brings operational experience from both law-enforcement and private-sector K9 deployments. That caliber of expertise shapes how we evaluate, select, and train every dog, and it’s the reason we stand behind each placement with complete confidence.
Our training philosophy rests on three pillars: obedience, socialization, and protection, always in that order. We don’t rush protection work. A dog with excellent bite work and no obedience foundation is a liability in a family home. We build the foundation first, so the protective instinct we develop later is controlled, commanded, and safe.
Champion Bloodlines, Verified Temperament
We source our dogs from proven European working lines, the same bloodlines behind many of the top-performing dogs in protection sport, police, and military work. But pedigree alone doesn’t guarantee the right dog for a family. Every dog we bring into the program is evaluated individually for temperament, nerve strength, sociability, and trainability before it enters our training path. Genetics give a dog its potential; our evaluation process determines whether that potential is a fit for family placement at all.
How We Match Dogs to Families
Every client relationship starts with a conversation, not a sales pitch. We ask about your household: Do you have young children? Other pets? An active or a quieter lifestyle? Prior dog ownership experience? Are you looking for a family companion with a protective edge, or a higher-drive personal security dog for an individual? Those answers shape which dog, which breed, and which training emphasis makes sense for you.
Transfer Training and Ongoing Support
Placing a dog isn’t the end of our involvement. Every delivery includes hands-on transfer training, where we work directly with you and your new dog to establish the same communication, commands, and trust our trainers built throughout the program. You will leave that first session feeling confident handling your new dog. And once you’re part of the Guardian Family, you receive lifetime support for your new best friend. We offer a range of follow-up options, including refresher training, maintenance sessions, and ongoing protection-readiness programs to ensure your dog remains sharp, reliable, and fully prepared to protect you and your family.

It is not hard to find dogs marketed as elite or fully trained that turn out to be underprepared for real family life, reactive, poorly socialized, or trained for bite work without the obedience foundation required to control it. We built our process specifically to avoid that gap.
We have partners in Europe and select only the very best dogs available. Excellent genetics are absolutely essential to building elite protection dogs, and our program is extensive. We begin evaluating puppies at eight weeks old and continue testing as they mature, studying courage, environmental stability, pack drive, prey drive, and defense drive. As the dogs grow, any that do not meet our requirements are removed from the program. Only the strongest candidates continue forward.
Every dog that enters our training program is evaluated individually rather than pushed through a generic script. Some dogs progress faster through obedience work than others. Some need more socialization exposure before they’re ready to move into protection-specific training. Our trainers adjust to the individual dog in front of them, because a training program that treats every dog identically regardless of temperament produces inconsistent results, and inconsistency is exactly what you don’t want in a dog meant to protect your family.

Our headquarters is located in Gilbert, Arizona, and our training facility was designed from the ground up to develop elite protection dogs. One training room is dedicated to building foundational skills such as obedience and bite development. The second training room is built to mimic a home environment, allowing us to ensure our dogs adapt easily to real household settings and giving us the ability to work through realistic home-invasion scenarios. Outdoors, we have tactical training areas and obstacle courses that expose our dogs to new challenges and build confidence. Beyond the facility, we take our dogs into public environments such as restaurants and bookstores to ensure they are fully prepared for real-world life. Each dog also spends time living in our trainers’ homes, which helps produce a balanced, stable dog trained at an elite level.

A Realistic Picture, Not a Sales Pitch
We’d rather you walk away from a conversation with us with an accurate understanding of what a protection dog actually requires than an inflated impression built on marketing language. Terms like elite and premium get used so often across this industry that they’ve largely lost meaning. What we’d rather you judge us on is specific: what training a dog has actually completed, how it behaves in real-world conditions, and how prepared you’ll be to maintain that training once the dog is in your home. If a protection dog isn’t the right decision for your household right now, we’ll tell you that too.
Serving Families Across the Country
While we’re based in Gilbert, Arizona, we place dogs with families and individuals nationwide, with every dog personally hand-delivered rather than shipped. That in-person delivery is deliberate. It’s your first opportunity to meet your dog in its new environment with a trainer present, ask questions in real time, and begin the transfer training relationship face to face rather than remotely. We’ve found this in-person approach leads to a much smoother transition than simply dropping a trained dog off and hoping the new owner figures out the rest.
Nationwide Placement
Our process doesn’t end when a dog leaves our facility. We stay involved through the transition, helping families understand their dog’s training, temperament, and needs. The goal is a confident partnership between the dog and the owner that lasts well beyond delivery day.
