The Guardian Difference: Our Training Process

At Guardian Protection Dogs, training is not a program with a start and end date. It is a two-year development process that begins the day a puppy enters our care and doesn't stop until we're confident the dog is ready to protect the people we're placing it with.

World-Class Protection Dogs, Professionally Trained For You

Guardian dogs are selected for their individual owners. To determine the right temperament and qualities of your future dog, we will guide you through a detailed and comprehensive evaluation process. This will ensure your new dog fits you like a glove. We take into consideration: work schedule, activity level, dog experience, family size, other pets, likely security threats, and much more. This extensive process ensures a great match for our clients.

Companionship

Guardian dogs are bred and trained to be great family companions - it is of the utmost importance to our company and clients. Only dogs of the highest quality and best temperament pass our rigorous selection and testing process. Our training programs ensure that all Guardian dogs fully integrate into their owner’s life. They are lifelong, loyal companions who love their owners like a pet while also safeguarding them like the reliable protectors they were bred to be.

Where It Starts

Every dog in our program begins environmental and temperament conditioning at 8 weeks old. Before any formal obedience or protection work begins, we expose young dogs to the full range of experiences they'll encounter in the real world - different surfaces, sounds, crowds, vehicles, animals, and unpredictable situations. This early foundation is what separates a dog that performs in training from one that performs when it actually matters.

How It Develops

At Guardian Protection Dogs, training is not a quick process and it is not outsourced. Every dog in our program is developed on-site in Gilbert, Arizona by our training team led by Shawn Thompson, an IGP champion with over 50 working titles.

Our program follows a structured timeline. From 8 weeks of age, puppies begin environmental conditioning and temperament evaluation. We assess each dog’s nerve stability, drive balance, and social confidence before advancing them through progressive training phases. Dogs that don’t meet our threshold at any stage are redirected out of the program. We do not compromise on quality to maintain inventory.

Between 8 weeks and approximately 6 months, the focus is on environmental exposure, socialization, and foundation obedience. From 6 months to roughly 14 months, dogs progress into advanced obedience, off-leash reliability, and introduction to controlled protection scenarios. From 14 months through 2+ years, protection training intensifies with real-world threat scenarios, handler protection exercises, and advanced engagement and disengagement drills.

By the time a dog is offered for placement, it has been trained and evaluated continuously for at least two years. The final phase includes transfer training where we work directly with you and your family to ensure a smooth transition and confident handling from day one.

What You Receive

By the time a Guardian dog is placed, it has been in structured development for a minimum of two years. Our team personally delivers every dog and spends dedicated time with you during the transfer period ensuring you understand your dog's commands, handling, and care before we leave.
